Richard M. Lewis was born on July 19, 1925 to Sherman and Anna Lewis in Uhrichsville, Ohio. Richard was the youngest of three brothers.

In 1944, Richard enlisted in the Navy, and served on the United States Battleship Wisconsin (USS BB-64) during WW II. Through the discipleship of a group of sailors on board the Wisconsin, Richard came to know the Lord. In 1946, he was honorably discharged and began attendance at Wheaton College in Illinois. It was there that he met T. Jeanne Elfline. They were married when he graduated in 1950.

Richard attended Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia Pennsylvania in 1950 earning a Theology degree in 1953. While in Philadelphia, Jeanne gave birth to their daughter Linda. Following seminary, Richard attended the University of Ohio in Columbus, Ohio. It was there in 1955 that Jeanne gave birth to their son Richard Jr.

In 1956 Richard was called to be the Pastor of Covenant Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, California. He was ordained to the Gospel Ministry in 1957 and served as Pastor of that church until his retirement in 2001.

In 1965, Richard returned to Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia to serve as a Special Lecturer in Systematic Theology for the Spring Semester, replacing Professor John Murray while he was on Sabbatical. During this time, Richard was offered a position teaching at the seminary. However, his deep desire and love was to be a Pastor so he returned to Berkeley, CA. While he was Pastor in Berkeley, he helped organize churches in Novato, Ca and Battle Mountain, NV.
